Last week James celebrated his birthday in class. All week he was VIP, which meant he could ask any questions he wanted, say whatever was on his mind, and have a free pass to the bathroom any time he was so inclined.
His teacher made a special time for James's family to join the class
for the celebration. James sat in the VIP Chair, and beside him was his
family. On the floor, facing him were his classmates. James introduced
his family, then had a picture show and tell. Afterwards, there was a
questions and compliments session, where his classmates got to ask him
any questions, and where his classmates gave him a compliment.
Some of the questions were "What's your favorite color?", "What's your favorite food?", "Do you have a pet?", "Can I come to your birthday party at your house?" The answers to which were, in respective order:
"Orange... and green, and blue, and black, and white!"
"Cheese pizza!"
"Yes!"
And last, but not least, "No!"
Hah hah hah hah! I don't think James thought he was going to get another birthday party.
Then came the more interesting compliments session. There were the run of the mill "I like you's", "You're fun to play with's", and then the more personal ones like "I like your favorite color, it's my favorite color too" [Which one? Heh heh heh heh heh heh.] To which James answered each one with a resounding "Thank you!"
And my personal favorite from a boy who seemed to be very fond of James. "James, when I grow up, and you grow up..."
My heart lurched with affection at what I expected to be something along the lines of a promise of ever lasting friendship...
"... can we can married?"
James immediately stood up, held out his hand in the police gesture to Freeze!, and exclaimed "No! Only boys and girls get married, silly!"
Afterwards, everyone went back to their tables to make birthday cards for James.
The same boy who wanted to marry James drew two stick figures, one holding a fishing pole over a pond, and a fish (labeled "Gold fish") at the end of the line, another figure standing on the other side of the pond, and a house.
"That's me, fishing." He volunteered to explain. "That's James. And that's our house."
He showed James his work, asking "Do you like it?"
James simply answered "Thank you!"
Can a boy be any sweeter than Jamesie Cat?
